About Us

What is Herdsy?

  • The next generation of farming technology
  • Inexpensive to use, plug and play and a highly secured, cloud-based service
  • The only technology that can be used on a wide range of animals – whether farmed or for animal conservation
  • Machine learning and AI service collecting and analysing a wide range of biological and physical data
  • It eliminates the need for expensive infrastructure
  • Provides financial tracking of costs and revenues to easily review and improve profitability

How it works?

  • The farmer buys tags and places it around the neck of the animal
  • The tag measures biomedical data such as heart rate, together with temperature, location, movement, Muscle mass as well as activity levels
  • The data is automatically transferred into the cloud-based account in Herdsy.com
  • Herdsy.com analyses the data and can either extrapolate across the herd or identify individual animals to monitor and track activity patterns as well as compare against industry and academic performance benchmarks for the breed
  • Alerts, though the website, messaging or smartphone app, are generated in the event of atypical or abnormal behaviour that is destructive to the value of the animal.
  • Input costs and revenues are tracked to identify cost and profitability drivers
  • The farmer can see summarised and anonymous best-case performance data for similar farms in their area/country
  • Time-based data can be shared, on request, with local vets to achieve earlier intervention or avoid unnecessary on-site visits

Features of our Technology

  • The tag can be used on any animal and is reusable, making Herdsy highly flexible and cost-effective
  •  Radio Frequency Technology Tag with a range of up to 30km, line of sight
  • GPS – One of the only Beef Tags in the world to have it.
  • Google maps integrated
  • Geofencing capability helps protect against animals straying, escaping or stolen
  • The vast majority of installations will not require wi-fi or cellular technology
  • Extensive data is logged and analysed with custom alerts being configurable
  • One tag per animal or, more cost-effectively, two tags per herd with data extrapolated across the herd
  • Benchmarking against industry or similar farm benchmarks
  • 24×7 monitoring with alerts on atypical behaviour vs animal history or herd averages
  • Customised data sharing (initiated by the farmer), e.g. to local Vet both to get earlier intervention or to avoid unnecessary site visits
  • Cost and Revenue tracker per animal and herd to identify impacts on profitability

Herdsy Highlights

The Experts are using Herdsy!

  • Herdsy Technology Chosen for groundbreaking EU Beef Study www.iof2020.eu
  • Herdsy Tech is being deployed on the UK Digital Livestock Labs, Show herd in Newcastle.
  • Only One of 4 Companies chosen in Ireland for the prestigious EU Project Diva Ag innovation program

Profitability Tracker

  • Animal technology focuses on animal management
  • Herdsy does this but, most importantly, extends this to include the impact on farm profitability
  • Recording costs of goods and services, e.g. feed for the herd and vet interventions by animal grades and revenues achieved from meat processors
  • Early identification of issues such as potential lameness, reduced activity
  • Emergency alerts for abnormal events such as breaching geo-boundaries
  • Monitoring of location to manage grazing patterns
  • Optional remote sharing of data with vets to review animal activity and health, both today and in the past
  • Optional remote sharing of animal quantities and readiness for the market with cattle buyers to streamline the supply chain

Why is it a Piggy Bank?

My family always had livestock, it’s in the blood, although my family were descended from the famous Cambridge Livery family, that coined the phrase “Hobson’s Choice”  due to the fact, that no matter what horse you wanted you’d always, get the one closest to the door. Although my Father & Grandfather were dyed in the wool Dublin men, who kept livestock, pigs in Dublin City, had he of lived, I think my grandfather would have been regarded as an original Hipster. I always wondered at the origins of the piggy bank and I found out that , back when, people used pigs as a means of saving. So, they fattened the animal usually kept it close by, sometimes even under the same roof, hence the idea of the “pig in the kitchen”, and then sold it to their local butcher all because they needed a simple reliable way to save as they didn’t trust banks. Now that’s hipster people producing food in the community for that community and imagine anyone not trusting a bank with their savings? It seems we are going back to old ideas to go forward today but one thing was for sure, Granny & Grandad were no fools.

“Farming is the Most Expensive Hobby I ever had” – R.Hobson Snr

My father was a builder that had a small 30 Acre holding in Kildare, he had to be part time to make it work. He would leave to go to the “paying job” as he called it and sometimes, not all the time, something, would happen to the Cattle that he wouldn’t notice it and it would inevitably wipe out his entire profit for that herd.  When he asked me to find something on the old “computer”, (I think he meant the internet), to help him monitor his herd, I couldn’t find it, not anywhere…

An Irishman & a Ukrainian Mathematician outstanding in their field!

While sounding like the opening line to a joke, I showed my friend Dmitri a Professor of Mathematics, my ideas to use off the shelf sensors with radio frequency delivery and utilising an algorithm to calculate the value and grading of that animal, using a model I had designed by observing livestock. Over the next few months Dmitri would mentor me, so that I could improve on its efficiency, to this day, he remains on as a key advisor to the board.

“If it can’t be done, it can be done in Cambridge”

Herdsy based in world famous city of innovation in Cambridge in January 2016. Herdsy was given a grant by the Cambridge Combined Authority to develop it’s original prototype, this proved that the technology was not only possible but buildable despite the insistence of many experts that a Beef Livestock tracking device was impossible, Herdsy successfully tests a prototype device.
